Student Insurance

Student Information

Eligibility for Health Services

Most international students are not entitled to publicly-funded health services while in New Zealand. If you receive medical treatment during your visit, you may be liable for the full costs of that treatment. Full details on entitlements to publicly funded health services are available through the Ministry of Health at: moh.govt.nz

Accident Insurance

The Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) provides accident insurance for all New Zealand citizens, residents and temporary visitors to New Zealand, but students may still be liable for all other medical and related costs. For further information: acc.co.nz

Travel and Medical Insurance

As an International student, you are required to have comprehensive travel and medical insurance whilst studying with the IAANZ. This must be valid from the time of departure from your country and cover you whilst you are training in the aircraft. This is a legal requirement under the NZQA code of practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students. International Aviation Academy of New Zealand (IAANZ) has agreed to observe and be bound by The Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021 from the NZQA website at https://www.nzqa.govt.nz/providers-partners/tertiary-and-international-learners-code/

According to the Code of Practice, medical and travel insurance policies must:

Cover the student whilst travelling to New Zealand

Cover when the student is in New Zealand

Cover the student for any travels back home during the study time

Cover medical care in New Zealand, including diagnosis, prescription, surgery, and hospitalisation

Cover for emergency evacuation/repatriation as a result of serious illness or injury which includes coverage for accompanying relatives

Coverage for death, including family travel costs to and from New Zealand, costs of corpse repatriation and expatriation, and funeral expenditures

Insure personal effects

Personal liability cover

Coverage for flying when training

Prior to enrolment, IAANZ will need to verify a student’s insurance. This verification method ensures that the insurance firm is respectable and well-established, with extensive expertise in the travel insurance industry and covers you whilst flying.
